29 September 2013

While in the car Tony and I were quietly talking about Alyson and she started to cry.

"Sister, it's alright. Mommy and Daddy aren't talking about you."

28 September 2013

At the family reunion at Claytor Lake.

"Can I go fishing???"

(She has never been fishing.)

27 September 2013

Passing a rest stop on I-81.

"Was that Home Depot?"

26 September 2013

As I walked through the door at Mom's after work to pick up the girls, I hear Alyson squeal at Madelyn, obviously completely oblivious to the fact that I was there.

Madelyn: "Mommy! I think she wants you to pick her up!"

25 September 2013

While talking about a little girl she played with at the park today:

"I know what her name is! Her name is.... Her name is.... I'll call her 'Cowboy' for today because that's what we were playing."

24 September 2013

Madelyn: Mommy?
Me: What?
Madelyn: I'm going to talk to Daddy. (Turns to Tony.) Daddy?

23 September 2013

A little background: Our rule at dinner is that Madelyn does not get any special food unless we're having something that I know she does not like (has had multiple times and really doesn't like it - we're all allowed to have foods we don't like). I always make sure that she at least has a side that she'll eat, but she has to eat at least one bite of everything on her plate. She doesn't get anything else to eat (no substitutions please!), but if she eats at least half of everything and has been good, there is the possibility for a little something for dessert (a small piece of candy, a cookie, etc). Dessert doesn't happen often. ;-) Tonight, we were having tilapia, which she has had before, but she was refusing to eat her required bite.

"I don't want to try the fish! I want to go to bed!"

(She ate her bite eventually and then went to bed.)

22 September 2013

Silly:

When we got back from dinner and were at Mom and Dad's to pick up the girls, we were telling them all about what we ate. Madelyn immediately interrupted with:

"What did you have for dessert?!"

Sweet:

Before getting ready for baths, both girls were playing on the floor in our room as Tony and I quickly changed out of our dressy clothes from dinner. Madelyn informed us:

"I'm giving my sister hugs because I love her."

Awwwww...

21 September 2013

First:

While playing an animal noise "guessing" game:

Tony: I've got one. Oink, oink, oink.
Madelyn: We're not doing the pigs right now. I'm going to do the pig. You do the duck. It goes quack.

Second:

After dinner:

"I'm going to get up now! Daddy, don't get up."

Friday, September 20, 2013

20 September 2013

During dinner, she was playing with her edamame "seeds" and drinking her milk:

"Mix up the seeds into batter and then they turn into liquid, then milk, then you heat it up to drink it...."

Um, okay then.

19 September 2013

As reported by Grandma:

A couple weeks ago, Alyson became the "Giant" when Madelyn and her grandma are playing with the Sesame Street plush and Alyson is there as well. Today, they were playing and her grandma started to give Ernie to Alyson.

Madelyn: No! Don't give Ernie to the Giant!

18 September 2013

First:

Staying at Mom's for pancakes for dinner:

Mom to Madelyn: How many pancakes do you want?
Madelyn: Uh, 10!

And Mom made her 10 little pancakes.

Second:

Madelyn made loud raspberries and then said to her GG: "That came out of you?!?!"

(This is often said by GG to Alyson when she is squealing.)

17 September 2013

While FaceTiming with Daddy, Madelyn asked to see his hotel room. Tony obliged and showed her via the iPhone.

Madelyn: There's a bed in there!
Tony, laughing: Yes there is.
Madelyn: Wow!

16 September 2013

(Not funny, but sweet.)
While FaceTiming her daddy on a work trip in Texas:

"Daddy, when can I go to Texas?"

Sunday, September 15, 2013

15 September 2013

Randomly throughout the day, Madelyn could be heard singing:

"All we want to do is eat your brains."

(From Jonathan Coulton's song "re: Your Brains". Thanks, Tony.)

12 September 2013

Madelyn: Mommy, maybe when I get bigger I can have Stompies and Sea Pets and all the things I see on tv.

Me: When you're older and you have your own money you can buy whatever you want.

Madelyn: Will you go with me? Wait, I already have money!

11 September 2013

Last night we had pancakes for dinner. As usually happens, Madelyn had leftovers for breakfast today. Dinner tonight had to be quick and something I knew Madelyn would eat because of a meeting Tony and I had to go to, so it was just grilled cheese sandwiches. This conversation happened on the way home after picking the girls up from Mom's:

Me: What do you want on your grilled cheese sandwich for dinner tonight?
Madelyn: But I didn't want grilled cheese for dinner! I wanted pancakes!

Something like this happens every time we have pancakes....

10 September 2013

First

While sitting at the table waiting for dinner.

Madelyn: "I wanna wheat! I wanna wheat!" (I want to eat! I want to eat!)
Tony: "How about we give you some barley instead of wheat?"
Madelyn, panicked and starting to bawl: "But I don't like barley!"

Second

Tony was asking Madelyn questions about what she did at preschool today during dinner.

Madelyn's response: "Can't we discuss this after dinner?"

09 September 2013

The Fall 2013 Fisher Price catalog came in the mail today addressed to Madelyn. I hand it to her with a pen and ask her to look at it and circle what she wants.

"I want that one."

Scribble, scribble.

"And that one."

Scribble.

"And that one."

Basically circles the page... This goes on for at least 10 minutes. And, yes, I'm sure every child has done this at some point.

08 September 2013

First:

While eating breakfast:
"Yum, yum, Jupiter!"

Second:

Tony was getting his cereal out of the cabinet for his breakfast and knocked the plastic jar of Nutella on the floor.

Me: You dropped it.
Madelyn: Did it break?
Tony: It's plastic.

Almost immediately, Alyson dropped her plastic Elmo ring toy thing from the high chair.

Tony: You dropped it.
Me, while eying Madelyn: Did it break?
Madelyn, without missing a beat: It's plastic!

07 September 2013

It's a Saturday during college football season, so you can guess what was on the television.

Madelyn: Can I watch Doc McStuffins?
Me: No, we're watching football.
Madelyn: But I don't want to watch this.
Me: Well, this is what we're watching.
Madelyn: How long until this program is over?

She will learn.... ;-)

06 September 2013

While playing with her washcloth after dinner:

"My hand is a chicken. Now it's a dog. Woof!"

Thursday, September 5, 2013

05 September 2013

First:

This is just typical of our girl, but not really anything she said. At her preschool open house, she was super excited and talking to all of the other kids. When the teacher came out to get everyone and go down the hall, she didn't even wait. She took off IN FRONT OF THE TEACHER and didn't look back to even see if we were coming. The teacher was talking to us later and was laughing about it and that we all expected her to behave that way.

Second:

We went to the park this afternoon. While there, Madelyn started to talk to a woman there with a little girl:
"Hi. My name is Madelyn. I'm three-and-a-half. That's my baby sister, Alyson. She wets the bed. I wet my training pants, too...."
And, on and on she went. We were all just laughing at her. I need to work with her on not talking to strangers so much. Oh, and her sister doesn't really wet the bed (as in her diapers generally do their job), and Madelyn actually keeps her training pants dry most nights. No idea where all of it came from.

Third:

Whenever Madelyn whined today:
Me: Do you need to go take a nap?
Madelyn: No! I'm a big girl!
Me: Okay, then stop whining or you're taking a nap.
The whining would immediately stop.

04 September 2013

My big girl starts preschool tomorrow. After dinner, I was writing her name on her tote bag for her. When I asked her what color she wanted, she very matter-of-factly replied, "Purple, because purple is my FAVORITE color."

Tuesday, September 3, 2013

03 September 2013

As we were leaving Mom and Dad's after I picked the girls up after work.

Madelyn, to them as they walked away from the car and we began to pull away (windows closed, they couldn't hear): Bye, Grandma and Grandpa! See you tomorrow!
Me: You'll see them later when they come watch you and Alyson while Daddy and I go to your preschool meeting, remember?
Madelyn: Fine then, I'll say both. Bye, Grandma and Grandpa! See you later and tomorrow!

Monday, September 2, 2013

02 September 2013

While walking through the parking lot to Joann's, which is where we watched 4th of July fireworks this year and last year.

Madelyn: When do we get to see fireworks again?
Me: Next year.
Madelyn: But I thought we were going to the condo again next year!

01 September 2013

Talking about Auntie Julie while eating dinner:
Madelyn: "Does she have any children?"
Me: "No."
Madelyn: "Can she buy some?"

Daily Madelynisms August 2013

I'm going to start posting all of my Daily Madelynisms in this blog in order to keep them. Here is everything from when I started on 07 August 2013 to yesterday (31 August 2013).

07 August 2013

"It's okay to drop your frog." (I can't give any context because there isn't any. She just randomly blurted it out.)

08 August 2013

(While both girls were taking a bath) "I'll throw it to her. It's just a duck."

09 August 2013

She was "reading" a card we got in the mail yesterday and pretending it was a birthday card for herself. In the middle of all of it I caught this sentence:
"You are the best Madelyn ever."

10 August 2013

After dinner, Alyson let out a huge fart. Tony said it was my turn because he had already changed two poopy diapers today. I said I had changed one. Madelyn chimes in excitedly with "It's my turn to change sister's diaper!"

12 August 2013 (1 of 3)

On the way home, Madelyn and I were talking about what we were going to have for dinner. (Paraphrased other than what is in quotes.)
Me: We're going to have BLT sandwiches for dinner.
Madelyn: Ew! I don't like BLTs.
Me: Do you even know what a BLT is?
Madelyn: No.
Me: Well, can you guess what the B might stand for?
Madelyn: "Bread!"

12 August 2013 (2 of 3)

While eating dinner: "I'm eating bacon!"
Followed in a deeper, almost sultry voice by: "It's sooooo gooood...."

12 August 2013 (3 of 3)

Madelyn: Daddy, guess who's my boyfriend.
Tony: Who?
M: Ernie!
T: Like Sesame Street Ernie?
M: Yup.
T: Why is he your boyfriend?
M: Because he loves me.
T: Does he love anyone else?
M: Yup, Bert.

13 August 2013

Daddy, lift me up so I can practice for the inksack flying contest tomorrow!
(Inksack = insect, and we live in a constant world of make believe)

14 August 2013

(paraphrased because she changed it every time she said it):
While taking her bath and playing with her ducks:
We love ducklings. Yes we do. Stinky cheese is everywhere. Ducklings!

15 August 2013

A glimpse into the frustrating joy of preschoolers:
Madelyn declared herself done with dinner and said she had to go potty. Off she went to the bathroom. A little bit later, we hear "The toilet paper is all gone!" Tony and I look at each other because we knew there should have been more than enough for her left on the roll. One of us yells back, "What do you mean it's all gone?" She answers with something like "There isn't anymore." Tony goes in there and starts asking her how many pieces she used. She responded with "One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six." (Turns out she did use about six pieces, which isn't a big deal, but was probably more than she needed. She got a reminder about not using too much toilet paper, which then led into a discussion of what "clogged" means and what could happen if she clogs the toilet. I hope she doesn't try to see firsthand. Oh, and Tony put on a new roll....)

16 August 2013

Background: Madelyn has started having imaginary friends. Her imaginary friends are actual friends that she pretends are with her. Every time they are her friends Caroline and Ellie. Tonight at dinner, they suddenly have a sister "Alysa". However, Alysa wasn't able to come play because:
"Her boyfriend got a boo boo on his knee because he was flying a kite yesterday and he fell on the sidewalk."
By the way, his name is "A-Ellie". Oh the imagination....
(pronounced A-Lisa apparently)

17 August 2013

Isn't really a quote, but what Elena and Madelyn were doing. While at the zoo, they were riding around in the wagon. They only see each other every few months (the last time was actually December), but they play like they see each other everyday. While in the wagon, the girls were making up and singing the most random songs just like they planned it. Oh, she also said something hilarious at lunch but I don't remember exactly what.

18 August 2013 (1 of 2)

Madelyn to Alyson: "The way you get around is to use your flippers on the ground."

18 August 2013 (2 of 2)

Done with her pizza and acting like the crazy, sugar-hyped child that she is and fake laughing hysterically, I tell her that she seems like she's ready for bed (i.e. over-tired). Instantly, in a completely serious, deadpan face, "But, I want dessert."

19 August 2013

Tony, while signing "no" to Madelyn: Madelyn, do you know what this means?
Madelyn: No.
T: You don't know what it means?
M: Yes, I do.
T: But you just said "no". Do you know what it means?
M: No.
T: Are you sure?
M: Yes.
This continues a bit longer until Madelyn finally gets frustrated but still doesn't quite get it and retorts: It means no!

20 August 2013

Today's is an action, not something she said. When I got to Mom's to pick up the girls, they were playing in Madelyn's room there on the bed. Alyson started scooting toward me because she wanted me to pick her up. I was holding her and she was trying to get down, so I put her on the floor facing the bathroom across the hall. She started her froggy scoot across the hall toward the bathroom. I got up and turned her around when she got close to the bathroom door. After I picked her back up, Madelyn declared that she wanted to scoot to the bathroom, so she got down on the floor and tried to copy her sister's way of getting around, which was harder than she expected. She made it to the bathroom, turned around and came back, all while Alyson looked at her like she was crazy.

21 August 2013

In our house, you can go in a circle around a wall to go through the living room, kitchen, and hall. Madelyn was running around the circle singing/yelling "I'm going to go potty!" (But not actually heading to the bathroom)

22 August 2013

While trying to pick up her corn niblets first by spearing them and second by scooping them with her fork, but not having much success,
Me to Madelyn: Why don't you try your spoon?
Madelyn: This is a spoon. It's a spoon fork.

23 August 2013

While in the car on the way to Silver Diner where Madelyn knew we were going:
Madelyn: I see Silver Diner! I want to go to Silver Diner.
Tony: I don't think we can do that. We're going to Silver Diner.
Madelyn, sighing loudly and then continuing exasperatedly and completely seriously: You're always teasing me, Daddy!

24 August 2013 (1 of 2)

In the car on the way back from the Farmer's Market Alyson was fussy.
Madelyn: I understand what babies say.
Tony: Oh really? What did Alyson say?
Madelyn: She said, "Waaahhh! Waaaahhhh!"

24 August 2013 (2 of 2)

On a springing seesaw at a park, Madelyn was on one end and I was holding Alyson seated on the other end while bouncing Alyson's end up and down:
Madelyn: Faster, Mommy!
Me: This is as fast as I can go while holding your sister on it. (Alyson is laughing and squealing the whole time.)
Madelyn: Well, kick her off!
(A lady sitting nearby bursts out laughing.)

25 August 2013

Madelyn was playing with her Phineas & Ferb figures when I notice she has Candace and Dr. Doofenshmirtz kiss.
Me: Did Dr. Doofenshmirtz and Candace just kiss?
Madelyn: Yeah, they're at the wedding.
Me: Oh, are they getting married?
Madelyn: Yeah, and Phineas & Isabella.
Me: Oh, okay.
Madelyn: And Ferb is getting married, too.
Me: Who is Ferb marrying?
Madelyn: All of them!

26 August 2013

Tony and Madelyn were playing. Tony picked her up to fly, and she said, "Nifty galifty!"

27 August 2013

(video of Madelyn walking in front of the camera and sitting down while I was recording Alyson almost crawling)

28 August 2013

During dinner while refusing to eat any chicken: "I like fried chicken, but I don't like cooked chicken."

29 August 2013

After dinner she wanted a graham cracker, a marshmallow, and a chocolate bar, but not a s'more.

30 August 2013

We can do lots of things tomorrow. We can play jammie ball and PJ ball and shirt ball and wobby ball and ____ ball and ____ ball and ..... (This goes on for a good 10 seconds of increasing gibberish.) Those are the things we can do tomorrow.

And a full 3 or more minutes later:
Or we can play potato ball. I have lots of ideas!

31 August 2013 (1 of 2)

While talking about where she wanted to go to dinner: "I want to go to Pandora and have mac and cheese."
Me: "Do you mean Panera?"
Madelyn: "Yeah! Pandera!"

31 August 2013 (2 of 2)

We went to visit my grandma in the rehab center today. Madelyn said to her, "G.G., when you get home, I'm going to teach you how to walk!"
(Grandma laughed and replied, "Oh, from the mouths of babes.")
