31 July 2015

First

Tony to Madelyn and Alyson: Are you two excited to see Grandma and Grandpa again on Monday?
Me: They've missed you.
Madelyn: Why have they missed us?
Me: Grandma said it's been too quiet since you haven't been there.
Madelyn: Instead we've been here making lots and lots of noise!

Second

We went for one last walk on the beach this evening to hunt for seashells before packing up to head home (and Alyson literally tried to take the beach home as she put handfuls of sand in her bucket). Before we left the beach, the girls wanted to put their feet in the water one last time.

Me: Say "Bye, bye, beach."
Madelyn: Bye, bye, beach.
Alyson: Bye, bye, beach.
Madelyn: See you next year.
Alyson: See you next year.
Madelyn: We'll miss you.
Alyson: We'll miss you. Good night, beach.

(The whole time, a few elderly people were watching them and smiling.)

30 July 2015

While eating a popsicle after going to the pool this evening, Madelyn kept going on and on saying, "Almost done with my PL! 'PL' means popsicle. POP-sic-LLLL!"

29 July 2015

We went to Broadway at the Beach today for lunch and some fun. We ate lunch on the deck of Key West Grill. From there, we could see across the lake the dragon that comes out of the castle at the mini-golf course near the fountain people can go in.

Madelyn: When are we going in the fountain?
Me: After we leave here, we'll walk the rest of the way around the lake to the fountain.
Madelyn: But that's so far. If I get tired, I want someone to carry me.
Me: If you get too tired to walk there, then you're too tired to play in the fountain.
Madelyn: No, I'll just be too tired to walk!

28 July 2015

As we were sitting down to dinner:

Madelyn: Can we go to the pool after dinner?
Me: No, not tonight. Maybe tomorrow.
Madelyn, whining: Why not? I like going to the pool!
Tony: No one is saying that you don't like going to the pool. We're just not going tonight.
Madelyn, more whining: But I like the pool!
Me: We know that, but we don't want to go tonight. How about we go for a walk on the beach instead and you can hunt for seashells?
Madelyn, suddenly very happy: Oh! Okay!

27 July 2015

As we were heading out for some shopping, playing, and dinner (not necessarily in that order):

Madelyn to Alyson: Are you ready to to go the playground?
Me: We're not going to the playground.
Madelyn: I know. I just said that because we're going to PLAY on the GROUND!

26 July 2015

While we were playing in the sand and Madelyn was sitting in a tide pool:

Madelyn, holding her sand-covered hands up: I need to wash my hands off!
Me: You're stilling in a tide pool. Just put your hands in the water.
Madelyn: Oh yeah.

25 July 2015

Being stuck in the car for hours and hours leads to odd things being said by our five-year-old:

Madelyn, to Tony: Why did Dobby send the plunger to the Quidditch game?
Tony, laughing: You mean bludger?

And later: When I shake my legs, my skin wiggles.

24 July 2015

For the last couple of days, we have been telling the girls that the plan for leaving for the beach tomorrow morning is that they will sleep in comfy clothes tonight, get up and go potty, get in the car, and we leave. Today at dinner:

Madelyn: I think you'll have to pick me up and just carry me to the car tomorrow because I'll be asleep.
Me: No, you'll have to go potty and get your skort on.
Madelyn: Oh yeah....

23 July 2015

The girls each have a cardboard truck from Silver Diner that they have been playing with all week. Madelyn named hers "Blaze." Madelyn has gotten pretty good at putting them back together when they come apart. Hers came apart this morning in the car on the way to Mom's, and she declared, "I fixed Blaze because I'm a little engineer!"

22 July 2015

We had dinner tonight at Mom and Dad's. While we were waiting for Tony get there with the food, Madelyn kept trying to scare me. At one point, she went behind the chair I was sitting in, and loudly whispered, "Now Grandma, you tell Mommy that I'm not here." At that point, I slowly and carefully got out of the chair, walked around it behind her, and scared her instead. Yes, she screamed.

21 July 2015

In the car on the way to Mom's this morning, Madelyn was playing with her car and had it crash into something.

Madelyn: Sometimes Blaze isn't paying attention, and he crashes into stuff.
Me: That isn't good.
Madelyn: He just crashes into soft stuff like cotton candy, cauliflower, bushes....

(Wait? What?)

20 July 2015

When we got home and were walking to the front door:

Me, looking at the flower garden in the front yard: I need to water the flowers.
Madelyn, looking at "her" flower garden: I want to water my flowers! Actually... it's too hot. I want to go inside.

19 July 2015

Our rule at dinner is that everyone has to eat at least one bite of everything on their plates. Beyond that is up to the person eating, but everything has to be eaten to get dessert. The girls knew that today is National Ice Cream Day.

Alyson, with food still on her plate: Me done.
Madelyn: Did you want dessert?
Alyson: No.
Madelyn: It's ice cream!
Alyson: Oooh! [She grabbed her plate and ate more food.]

And later:

Madelyn: I don't want to eat this last shrimp.
Alyson, shocked: You no want dessert?

18 July 2015

When we were leaving Gina and Matt's house today, Madelyn was able to get Andrew to hug her, and they both fell over. Madelyn broke Andrew's fall (as in they fell back on Madelyn and Andrew fell on top of her), and Andrew gave her a big, open mouthed baby kiss. After they got up, Madelyn tried getting a "real" kiss from Andrew.

Madelyn: Andrew, give me a kiss!
Andrew ignored her.
Me: Madelyn, he already gave you a kiss.
Madelyn: But all I got was baby slobber!

17 July 2015

We went to Silver Diner for dinner tonight and Madelyn actually branched out and had something other than her normal blueberry pancakes. Instead, she got Coconut French Toast. But, they first brought out Quinoa Coconut Pancakes for her, and we had to tell the server that was wrong and get the right thing.

Me, after Madelyn ate some French toast: Do you like it?
Madelyn: Yeah, it's really good.
Me: See? Trying something different can be good. I bet you would even like the quinoa pancakes.
Madelyn: But I don't want that one. I don't think I'm ready for it yet.

16 July 2015

Alyson's Pley set, the Duplo airplane, came today. Madelyn started building it for Alyson so that they could play with it together. Alyson was trying to have her Duplo figure fly on the plane before Madelyn was done building it.

Madelyn: Alyson, you can't fly on that yet! It has to be inspected!
Alyson: Inspected?
Madelyn: Yeah, but I'm not sure what that means.

After I finished chuckling at her and writing this down, I explained what "inspected" means to Madelyn.

15 July 2015

While playing at Mom's today, the girls were playing in Mom and Dad's room. Madelyn was laying on the bed, and Alyson was laying on the floor.

Alyson, fake whining: Me scared down here!
Madelyn: Get up and come up here.
Alyson climbed up on the bed.
Madelyn, talking softly to Alyson and cuddling with her: There, there. Everything is going to be okay. You don't have to be scared.

14 July 2015

During dinner, we were telling the girls about New Horizons and showing them the picture of Pluto. Madelyn got very into it. I heard her quietly muttering, "Ten. Nine. Eight. Seven. Six. Five. Four. Three. Two. One. Blast off!" and lift her green bean off of her plate and "flew" it into her mouth.

13 July 2015

As we were leaving Mom's to go to Target to by Andrew's first birthday present, Madelyn realized that her grandpa's birthday was coming up.

Madelyn, in her 5-year-old stage whisper to Mom: What does Grandpa like?
Mom, trying to get her to stop asking since Dad was sitting right there: Your mommy knows. Why don't you ask her later?
Madelyn: I just want to know what he likes for his birthday.
Mom: I know. Ask your mommy later.
Madelyn, kind of annoyed at being put off: Oh, okay.

12 July 2015

Madelyn is always making up songs. This evening before bath, she ran up to me and exclaimed, "Mommy! I made up a new song! It's called the 'Scarred Heart of Jesus'." There were lyrics, but I was too busy trying not to laugh at her.

11 July 2015

While the girls were playing:

Alyson: Ow, my knee!
Madelyn: Let me see. Good thing I always bring a first aid kit when we go ice skating.

(Aly was not really hurt. She was just pretending while they were pretending to ice skate, which neither of them have actually done.)

10 July 2015

First

While trying to figure out where we were going for dinner tonight:

Tony: Madelyn, do you want seafood or Mexican?
Madelyn: Seafood! I want Orange Chicken!
Tony: That's not seafood.

Second

While in the bathroom at the restaurant after eating dinner:

Me: Are you done, Madelyn?
Madelyn: I'm pulling up my pants and my panties.
Random woman, laughing: I have a five year old.
Me, pointing toward the stall Madelyn was in: She's five. How did you ever guess?
Madelyn: I'm five and a half!

Thursday, July 9, 2015

09 July 2015

Madelyn took a really long nap this afternoon. During her nap, Mom took photos of the pretty girl sleeping.

Mom to me: Want to see the pictures of our sleeping beauty?
Madelyn: What sleeping beauty? Oh yeah, me!

08 July 2015

Critical thinking at work (and falling under JK Rowling's spell):

Tony stopped reading "The Chamber of Secrets" to Madelyn before bed at the point when Mrs. Weasley comes out and yells at the boys for taking the flying car.

Madelyn: Why was Ron coming to get Harry?
Tony: Because Ron wasn't getting answers to his letter to Harry because Harry wasn't getting his letters from Ron.
Madelyn: Why was Dobby stealing Harry's letters?
Tony: Because Dobby didn't want Harry to go to Hogwarts because he said something dangerous was going to happen there.
Madelyn: What's going to happen?
Tony: We don't know yet.

Tuesday, July 7, 2015

07 July 2015

After Madelyn tasted some of the chicken that was part of dinner:

"Eh, I don't hate it, but I don't love it. I'm in the middle. Actually, I love it!"

And she quickly ate another bite.

Monday, July 6, 2015

06 July 2015

On the way home today, Alyson was being loud in the car. Madelyn was playing with the toy butterfly that they keep in the car, but I couldn't see that.

Alyson yelled/screamed something.
Me: Alyson, you are LOUD!
Madelyn: Yeah, loud enough to scream across a bridge and wake up a butterfly.

Sunday, July 5, 2015

05 July 2015

On the drive home today, Madelyn and Alyson (mostly Madelyn) were watching "Ice Age". At one point, Madelyn made an astute observation about Sid, "That guy never shuts up!" Tony and I started laughing because Madelyn never shuts up either!

Saturday, July 4, 2015

04 July 2015

While watching the concert on TV before the 4th of July fireworks:

Nana, referring to the woman singing: Poppop, I want some shoes like hers.
Madelyn: Me, too! Wait let me see her shoes.

Friday, July 3, 2015

03 July 2015

While in Starbucks, Madelyn noticed a mural on the wall of a farmer with his hands full of coffee berries.

Madelyn: Are those cherries?
Me: No, those are the berries that have coffee beans in them.
Tony: The seeds of those are what coffee is brewed from.
Madelyn: Whoa! That's a lot of coffee!

(Note: While Googling to make sure they are called "coffee berries" I found that they are also called "coffee cherries". I will have to tell Madelyn.)

02 July 2015

While packing for our weekend trip to see Nana and Poppop and attend the sure-to-be-amazing wedding of Hark and Colin:

Madelyn: Are you sure I won't get to see 4th of July fireworks?
Me: Yeah, sorry. I think it's supposed to rain here, so maybe it will rain enough to postpone them to next weekend or something.
Madelyn: Really? Good because I don't want to watch them inside on the TV.
Me: Regardless, we can see fireworks when we're at the beach.
Madelyn, really excited: Really?!?!?!

Wednesday, July 1, 2015

01 July 2015

When I came to pick the girls up today:

Dad: Madelyn is going to be a fire woman.
Me: Why?
Dad: She slid down the pole at the park a lot today.
Madelyn, very proudly: I had to reach so far to do it! At first I was scared, but then I trusted myself, and I did it!
