28 February 2014

As we passed a CVS:

Madelyn: Does GG watch CVS?
Me, after I realized what she meant: Oh, no, she watches CBS.

27 February 2014

Upon showing Madelyn a photo of her grandpa when he was 19 that was put on Facebook:

Madelyn: Why is his hair different?
Me: Because that was a long time ago.
Madelyn: His face is the same. Can I go meet him?
Me: No, since to my knowledge, you don't have a way to time travel.

26 February 2014

Looking at a package that came today:

Madelyn: Mommy, who's this package for?
Me: Try to find the name on it.

A little while later:

Madelyn: Mommy, what does A-N-T-H-O-N-Y-D-O-W-N-S spell?
Me: Sound it out.
Madelyn: ah, nnn, tuh, huh, ooo, nnn, eeee..... There's an O and an N. That spells "on".
Me: What sound does T and H make together?
Madelyn: tuh, huh.
Me: No, th like "the".
Madelyn: ah, nnn, tuh, huh, ooo, nnn, eeee.....

This continued until I helped her sound it out and she figured out it said "Anthony". A package came yesterday addressed to the same person, so I thought it wouldn't take so long once she found the name. Usually she remembers words pretty well.

25 February 2014

Madelyn was very excited about something she did at preschool today.

"I solved the first ever missing red barrette mystery! Katie was upset she lost her barrette, so we got magnifying glasses, and I found it! Kishi was upset that she didn't find it."

24 February 2014

While playing with the Fisher Price school house at Grandma and Grandpa's today, Madelyn decided that one person was herself and one was her friend Kishi from preschool. They came to school with Madelyn's mommy because she is helping them with a surprise today for Tony. Madelyn said:

"People that know him calls him Tony, and those people who don't know him calls him Anthony."

Yup, her daddy has her trained well already.

23 February 2014

While in the bath playing with some toys:

"Why do you have so much wet water in here? My dolphin likes dry water best."

22 February 2014

Madelyn was counting and we told her to start counting backwards. Once she did that a bit:

Tony: How do you say the alphabet backwards?
Madelyn: I don't know.
Tony: Start with Z and say what goes before Z.
Madelyn: Z. Y. W.
Tony: No, close. What's before Y?
Madelyn: X! W. U.
Tony: Nope.
Madelyn: V. U.

She then continued this with only a few mistakes that she thought through when we pointed them out. Honestly, she did better than many adults. ;-)

21 February 2014

In the car on the way home from dinner:

Alyson: Ay ya ya ya ya ya!
Madelyn: That's right, Alyson, this song is called "Flickr".

(And, yes, Madelyn was right about what the song was called.)

20 February 2014

This morning before getting dressed, Madelyn was playing with her Elmo and Scuba Diver Mickey.

"Mickey is teaching Elmo how to scuba. This is Mickey's phone charger (pointing to the cord hanging from the scuba tank). Someone hid Mickey's phone under the sand in the water so that's why they're swimming around."

19 February 2014

Madelyn was playing in the kitchen with some toys while I was fixing dinner. She had the toys on the counter as Alyson was cruising from cabinet to cabinet. As she was playing:

"Everyone stay up here away from the giant monster! We don't want her to get us!"

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

18 February 2014

As I was saying good night to her:

Me: I love you.
Madelyn: I love you, too, Mommy.
Me: Who's your favorite person in the whole wide world?
Madelyn: Kishi! And, Javi's favorite person is the police officers.

17 February 2014

While I was emptying the dishwasher this morning, I asked Madelyn to help put away the silverware.

Madelyn: We have to clean up the bakery and get it ready for customers!

She then put away the silverware, got her toy vacuum and vacuumed the kitchen and living room. She even used the Dirt Devil when her little vacuum wasn't powerful enough (Yes, her toy vacuum actually vacuums.) Works for me!

16 February 2014

While we were playing Ticket to Ride, Madelyn was taking the train pieces and setting them up as a fence. Then, she was taking the trains and pretending they were animals. As she was moving an "animal" around, mostly to herself:

"I'm not a cow. I'm a horse living in a cow farm. That's crazy business."

15 February 2014

Madelyn didn't know that her Aunt Becca and Evan came last night instead of today. Before we went downstairs this morning:

Madelyn: When do you want Aunt Becca and Evan to come over?
Me: They probably already left to come here.

Friday, February 14, 2014

14 February 2014

Madelyn: Daddy, I'm hungry.
Tony: Well, it's almost time for lunch.
Madelyn: I'm not hungry for lunch. I'm hungry for a snack.

Bonus:
We left Sofia the First Valentine's cards in in the mailboxes of all of the houses on our block. She was so excited to surprise everyone.

13 February 2014

When Madelyn came downstairs this morning, she instantly saw the container of OxiClean I had left on the dining room table the night before after buying some for the first time ever.

Madelyn: Who bought OxiClean?
Me: You know that's OxiClean?
Madelyn: Yeah. (pointing to the letters) O-X-I-C-L-E-A-N.
Me: When did you hear about OxiClean?
Madelyn: On the TV at Grandma's.

12 February 2014

Madelyn's lunch today was a peanut butter and jelly sandwich cut into 4 triangles, a few potato chips, and a mix of dried cranberries and apples. After she had eaten the potato chips, one triangle of sandwich, and about half of her fruit, we started doing some math with what was left of her sandwich and she was getting pretty good with things resulting in four in one way or another. We then moved onto fingers. She decided it was her turn.

Madelyn, holding up two fingers: If you take away one, how many do you have left?
Me, hoping to get her to elaborate that she meant to take one away from two: From how many?
Madelyn, putting something into her mouth: Cranberry!

11 February 2014

First

Madelyn's elaborate Valentine's Detective Story that she wanted to tell us because she decided she's going to be a detective when she grows up:

"We found a mystery. We solved a mystery. We saved Valentine's Day."

Second

In response to her daddy teasing her after dinner:

"Tony, you're silly."

10 February 2014

First

Madelyn and Grandma played Chutes and Ladders today. After Madelyn won:

Madelyn, shaking her head back and forth: Don't I win a trophy or something?
Grandma: No. You have the pleasure of knowing that you beat me.

Second

After dinner, Madelyn was pretending that her wash cloth was her work of art. She wanted to hang it up to dry.

"It'll dry in a few jiffy."

09 February 2014

First

When breakfast was ready this morning:

"Alyson, come get in your seat!"

Second

Talking about playing with her friends at preschool (Adric and Rainel are identical twins):

They help me solve a mystery every Thursday and Tuesday. We look for clues and solve a mystery and save Valentine's Day. Adric and me are in charge of mysteries 'cause sometimes Rainel doesn't want to think of a mystery.

08 February 2014

First

While playing with her basketball doll that she has named "Alyssa Thomas":

"First up is Alyssa Thomas! She's the greatest player in the Comcast Center."

She had Alyssa score a basket.

"Touchdown!"

Second

We had some of the Olympics coverage on. Madelyn saw the Olympic torch and was confused about the fire. We explained what it was to her. Her response:

"Ummmm, torches are in Minecraft."

Third

On the way to the grocery store, I pointed out to Madelyn where one of her classmates, Diego, lives.

Madelyn: Can I go over and play sometime?
Me: We'll have to see.
Madelyn: Maybe we can have a sleep over when I'm older and Diego is taller.

(Ummm...no.)

Fourth

While waiting for our turn at the busy deli counter. Madelyn was examining the prices of different bags of pretzel crisps.

"Five nine nine! That's too much!"

Five

Madelyn was asking us what tool we could use to clear the clog from the drain pipe for the utility sink. We told her that Daddy would use the snake, but she had a "better" idea.

"Maybe you can use some tweezers!"

07 February 2014

First

Madelyn: What's Grandma going to do tonight?
Me: I don't know.
Madelyn: Sleep?
Me: Probably.
Tony: Actually, knowing your grandma, she won't sleep until tomorrow morning.
Madelyn: Why?
Tony: Because she's an insomniac so she doesn't sleep.
Madelyn: But if she doesn't sleep, she'll be tired tomorrow!

Second

When Madelyn was almost done with her pizza:

Madelyn: Daddy, can you cut this off of the crust?
Tony: I don't appear to have a knife.

Madelyn with a huge, excited smile on her face: I'll go get you one!

06 February 2014

Following every made foul shot at every Maryland Women's Basketball game this year (and also the ones we have watched at home):

Tony: Woosh! Wooz.
Me: Oopsie.
Madelyn: But she did it!

05 February 2014

At Grandma and Grandpa's today, a commercial came on for a special light to use to read in a car at night.

Madelyn: I will not do that. I have to sleep at night.
Grandma: Well, maybe when you are older.
Madelyn: Maybe when I am like 10 years old, and I will stay up all night EVERY NIGHT!

Tuesday, February 4, 2014

04 February 2014

For dinner tonight, we had a frittata with ham, spinach, and cheese. Madelyn knew that we were essentially having an omelet. When she saw it, she panicked:

"Are there veggies in my omelet? Why are there veggies in my omelet??"

Monday, February 3, 2014

03 February 2014

First

Last night, Madelyn had a bad dream. It was about a zebra in her curtains. The main problem with this dream, she said very emphatically, was that:

"Zebras DO NOT belong in the United States."

Second

Before Tony got home, Madelyn, Alyson, and I were playing in the playroom. Alyson tried taking a Duplo dog that Madelyn had put onto the base she was using, and Madelyn retaliated by punching her in the arm. Alyson just looked at her and kept playing since Madelyn really didn't punch her very hard, but it earned Madelyn a timeout. I texted Tony about this during the timeout just so he was aware of it. When he got home:

Tony, to Madelyn: Were you a good girl?

Madelyn looked around guiltily, turned around, and walked out of the room without saying a thing.

Sunday, February 2, 2014

02 February 2014

Alyson was pulling things out of the baking supplies cabinet. Madelyn didn't like it one bit.

Madelyn to Alyson: I'll help you clean up because it's a real mess. You shouldn't make a tall mess.
Me: So a short mess is okay?
Madelyn: Yes.

01 February 2014

First

As we were leaving the house to go to dinner:

Tony to Madelyn: Which car do you want to take?
Madelyn, pointing to Tony: I like the songs in your car.

As we were getting into the car:

Madelyn: Can we listen to DNA? I like DNA.

Second

While in the car, Madelyn was singing along to a song. I laughed about her knowing all of the words:

"Yeah, I really know these songs."

Third

We got ice cream for dessert. As we were leaving the ice cream place, we passed by a trashcan at the door painted with cow spots.

Madelyn: Why does the trashcan look like a cow?
Tony: What is ice cream made from?
Madelyn: COWS!
