31 August 2014

While watching "Diaper Dance" in the "Baby Signing Time" DVD in the car on the way home:
"You're naked but you're not completely naked because you have a diaper on."

30 August 2014

We saw some dolphins swimming by the beach today. Madelyn was very excited:

"Wow! I didn't know there were dolphins at this beach!"

Also:
Somehow convinced Madelyn to go on the Sea Dragon at Funland. She loved it until about halfway through. Then, she wasn't so sure. Of course, when we got off, she declared it "the best ride ever."

And:
Madelyn said we couldn't just have ice cream for lunch today because ice cream is sugar.

Finally:
Madelyn was up and in her bathing suit around 6:30 this morning.

29 August 2014

Madelyn was packing up some toys to take to the beach. She was going on and on about their "new baby sister," her Baby Belle doll. She decided to pack the doll and started to stuff the doll into the bag head first.

Me: You're putting your baby sister in head first?
Madelyn: She likes to go head first into things...but not into the pool.

28 August 2014

We got home, Madelyn put their lunch boxes on the kitchen counter, and grabbed (and ate) a cherry tomato from the bowl on the counter. Yup, that's my girl.

27 August 2014

We had some Buffalo wings with dinner tonight. I gave Madelyn a small piece from one of mine to try, but it didn't have much hot sauce on it.

Madelyn: I like it! Can I have one?
Me, in disbelief: Okay.
Madelyn after touching the wing I gave her to her tongue: Ah! It's hot!
Me: Peel the skin off and then eat it.
Madelyn peeled a piece of skin off and put that in her mouth.
Madelyn: Hot!
Me: I didn't mean for you to eat the skin!

26 August 2014

Before bed, I was being silly and laying on Madelyn's bed. I was laying on my back with my butt and up on her bed and my legs and feet off of the bed with my feet flat on the floor. Madelyn decided she was going to climb up my legs/me to get up on her bed. I braced myself and started making a grimacing face. Madelyn noticed and tried to reassure me:

"Don't worry. This will only hurt a second."

25 August 2014

Dinner tonight was cheeseburgers, mac and cheese, and green beans (yeah, super healthy, I know). This really isn't one of the girls' favorite meals (they don't really like burgers), but it was what we were having, so there. Anyway, after taking a bite of everything:

Madelyn: This is my favorite meal ever!
Me: Better than pancakes?
Madelyn, thinking: This is my less more favorite meal than pancakes.

24 August 2014

First

Lately, Madelyn has been pretending that Alyson is her daughter. Today, she announced as she was looking at a little picture with Baby Jesus on it:

"My daughter's nickname is Alyson, and her real name is Jesus. I'm pretending Jesus is a girl."

Second

Madelyn and Alyson were going around pretending to talk to someone on a toy phone (well, really Alyson was going around yelling at Madelyn every time Madelyn took the phone from her). Madelyn told whoever it was "bye" very abruptly and then explained to me:

"I hung up with them because they're some boring people to me."

23 August 2014

Madelyn watched "The Little Mermaid" today for the first time. She was doing fine with it until Prince Eric almost married Ursula. At the part when Ariel turns back into a mermaid, she lost it and started crying and panicking. We had to pause the movie to get her to calm down. When we asked her what she was afraid of and she finally calmed down enough to answer us:

Madelyn: She turned back into a mermaid!!!!!
Tony: Is the movie over yet?
Madelyn: Almost!
Tony: But is it over yet?
Madelyn: No!
Tony: Then you need to keep watching and see what happens.
Madelyn, calming down: Okay....

We started the movie back up, and she watched, but still got (understandably) upset and scared.

When the movie was over:

"I liked it! And, I didn't even get scared!"

22 August 2014

Me: Madelyn, what do you want for dinner?
Madelyn: Pancakes!
Me: But we just had pancakes.
Madelyn: So?
Me: I bet, if you could, you would eat pancakes for every meal every day.
Madelyn: No! I want to eat healthy sometimes!

21 August 2014

This afternoon, Alyson fell face first off of the couch. I wasn't in the room at the time. Madelyn instantly jumped into big sister mode. She hugged her sister and kissed her and kept trying to make sure she was okay (she was fine). Once Alyson calmed down and stopped crying, Madelyn did the cutest thing:

Madelyn: Aw, let me go get her a tissue.

Madelyn ran off and came back with a tissue. She folded it and held it up to her sister's nose.

Madelyn: Okay, blow.
Alyson blew. Madelyn took the tissue away and folded it over again and put it back up to her nose.
Madelyn: Blow again.
Alyson gave a little blow.
Madelyn: Come on. Big blow, big blow.
Alyson blew harder.
Madelyn, taking the tissue away and gently wiping her nose: Good girl. Is that better?
Alyson, quietly: Yeah....

20 August 2014

During lunch Madelyn wanted more milk. Her grandma filled up her cup, and Madelyn drank some without the lid on it.

Madelyn, laughing: I have a mustache!

Then, she got the lid with a crazy straw in it. After she drank some of the milk, she started blowing bubbles into it and it bubbled out of the spout in the lid.

Madelyn, laughing again: My cup has a mustache on it!

19 August 2014

Random conversation during dinner:

Madelyn: I'm glad I'm not a mascot because I'm afraid of mascots.
Me: So, if you were a mascot you would be afraid of yourself?
Madelyn, looking at me like I just stated the obvious: Yeah.....

Monday, August 18, 2014

18 August 2014

Madelyn has a little stuffed clown fish aka "Nemo" that is usually in her bed. She informed us this morning after she was up that Nemo was laying on her pillow to go back to sleep:

"Nemo wants to sleep because he's a Monday-hibernator."

Sunday, August 17, 2014

17 August 2014

Madelyn had been making peach fruit leather with me (didn't turn out right, and I'm disappointed). The pan was in the oven so she went to play and I started working on dishes. Suddenly, she ran back into the kitchen.

Madelyn, jumping up onto the stool at the counter: I'm ready!
Me: Ready for what?
Madelyn: For waiting!

Then, she ran back off.

16 August 2014

Before Madelyn vacuumed the living room this morning, Tony asked her to put away her baby doll that was on the ottoman.

Madelyn: But I don't want to wake her up. She's napping.
Tony: The vacuum is loud. That will wake her up. Move her to the playroom where it will be quieter.
Madelyn: Well, she's a silent baby. She never hears anything loud, except for polar bears.

15 August 2014

Talking about Alyson picking food out of her bib and eating it:

"She's going to go shopping at bib.com."

Thursday, August 14, 2014

14 August 2014

Madelyn and Alyson were playing on the floor. Alyson was laying on top of Madelyn and kept leaning down to kiss and hug her. Madelyn declared:

"She's the loviest child of all!"

Wednesday, August 13, 2014

13 August 2014

Tony and I were in the kitchen finishing fixing dinner. Madelyn and Alyson were in the living room playing. We randomly hear Madelyn singing to the tune of "Let It Go":

"Let it down. Let it down. Add another triangle. Add another triangle."

(No idea....)

12 August 2014

I picked the girls up early today, which of course was while it was pouring. As we got into the car, the conversation went something like:

Madelyn: Why is it raining?
Me: Because the clouds have too much water in them and can't hold it anymore.
Madelyn: Oh, okay....
Me: It's sort of like when you have to go potty and you can't hold it anymore.
Madelyn laughed at that.

Later, we went to Target. It wasn't raining anymore, and the sun was coming out.

Me: The sun is coming out! The clouds are going away!
Madelyn: Where are the clouds going?
Me: The clouds are blowing away with the storm.
Madelyn: I think the clouds went to play because they don't have to go potty anymore.
Me: Haha. Okay.

I texted Tony to tell him what Madelyn said. I laughed at his response of "Okay then...."

Madelyn: Why did you laugh?
Me: I laughed at Daddy's response to what you just said.
Madelyn: I'm always thinking of silly ideas!

11 August 2014

Could someone be tired of summer?

"Today is a snow day. The whole week is a snow day. It won't be summer until Friday. We need our boots and snow clothes."

10 August 2014

During the Gospel reading today during Mass while Jesus was talking to the disciples as he walked on water:

Madelyn, whispering: How did Jesus talk to them?
Me, whispering back: Um, he just talked to them?
Madelyn: No, I mean how did a baby talk?
Me, trying not to laugh: Jesus grew up to be a man, and he talked when he grew up.
Madelyn: Oh....

09 August 2014

While at the farmers' market this morning, Tony and I got some iced coffee. We both ordered the large size.

Madelyn: Can I have a taste?
Me: Sure.
Madelyn: Well, if I'm having a taste, I want the small one.
Me: If you're having a taste, you're just having a sip of mine, so you don't get to pick the size.
Madelyn: Oh. (She tasted the coffee.) I like it!

08 August 2014

Our conversation in the car on the way to dinner turned to alcohol and that Madelyn couldn't drink until she was much older. For a four-and-a-half-year-old this equates to:

"When I'm as tall as a giraffe's neck."

Thursday, August 7, 2014

07 August 2014

As the girls were getting ready for bed tonight, we measured them on their growth charts. Madelyn was waiting for Alyson's height to be measured.

"I want to see Alyson's wall height!"

(You know, as opposed to any other height she may have.)

Wednesday, August 6, 2014

06 August 2014

Before dinner, Alyson was yelling at Madelyn:

Alyson, looking straight at Madelyn not for me: Mama!
Madelyn: I am not your mama!
Alyson: Mama!
Madelyn: I am not your mama!
Me: Alyson, where is Madelyn?
Alyson pointed to Madelyn.
Me, pointing to Madelyn: What is her name?
Alyson: Mama!
Madelyn: Ugh!

05 August 2014

While her grandma was fixing her lunch:

Mom: Do you want crunchy or smooth peanut butter?
Madelyn: Plain.

(It was assumed that that meant smooth/creamy.)

04 August 2014

First

While eating some bread from Buca di Beppo at Grandma and Grandpa's for Grandpa's birthday dinner:

Madelyn: I love this bread! It's eighteen times yummier than sandwich bread.
Grandma: Why only eighteen times?
Me: What scale are you using for your measurements?
Madelyn: A TV scale!

Second

Also during dinner:

G.G., continuing to eat her ice cream cake: I'm so full!
Madelyn: Why are you still eating if you are full?
Grandma mumbled something incoherent due to her mouthful of ice cream cake.

Madelyn: I'm sorry, I didn't understand you with your mouth full.

03 August 2014

Tony asked Madelyn to bring a container around back to me in the garden. I had suggested she come out to help me pick raspberries, but Tony didn't tell her why she was taking the container to me. When she got to me outside:

Madelyn, handing me the container: Here, Mommy, why did you want the container?
Me, thinking Tony had told her about picking raspberries: To help me pick raspberries....
Madelyn, not admitting that she didn't know: Oh yeah!

02 August 2014

While in the car, Madelyn tried to tell me something without her daddy hearing.

Tony: What Madelyn?
Madelyn: Uh, Daddy, I'm not telling this to you.

01 August 2014

First

While playing in the pirate ship at the Children's Museum of South Carolina today, a little boy maybe around eight-years-old started messing with Tony about being on the ship. Tony was on the ship to watch Alyson. The boy was giving Tony attitude and telling him to get off his ship (all in play as he was pretending to be a pirate).

Tony, pretending to block the boy in the cabin of the ship: You're confined to the quarters.
Madelyn: You can't find any quarters!

Second

In the car listening to Disney music (yet again):

"This is called Tale As Old As Time" or "Beauty and the Beast" and it's from Beauty and the Beast and Mary Poppins sings it."
